Your ‘Higher Self’ is the Real You

The Higher Self

Your higher self is the real you, your total soul consciousness. The you that is living here on earth is just a projection of the consciousness of your higher self. Your higher self is the perfect form of ‘you’ and it actively guides you on your journey through life. Dr. Albert Schweitzer called the higher self, ‘the wise doctor within.

The Lower Self

The lower self, our ego personality, is not our true self because the ego is trapped in its own desires, wants, needs, likes and dislikes. As soon as an ego-based person achieves its desire or acquires an object, a new one springs forth in an unending sequence.

Realizing our Higher Self

By engaging in spiritual practices, such as meditation and study, we are able to transcend our ego personality and begin to realize our higher self. When our personality (the unification of your spiritual, emotional and mental bodies) has fully developed, integrated and evolved, it then becomes our higher self. As our higher selves, we can then carry out the purposes of our soul instead of following the desires of our ego personality.

Further Defining the Higher Self

Your higher self is not male or female. Your higher self resides in the ‘ether plane’ but it still quite connected to you. Nothing can break that connection. Your higher self has access to your thoughts, goals, intentions, and everything that you are thinking and feeling. The role of the higher self is to watch over you and steer you in the right direction.

Connecting to the Higher Self

Although you are always connected to your higher self, you can consciously connect with it. First begin to listen to your higher self. It may sound like your intuition, the voice of reason, or discernment.

If hearing is not working, try seeing your higher self. Invite your higher self to come sit and talk to you. Ask questions and notice the answers. When the answers sound wiser and more knowledgeable than you usually do, you probably are speaking with your higher self.

Another method is through journaling. Write a question, listen for the answer, and write it down. Some people use two different colored pens, one for themselves and one for their higher self.

Contact with our higher self is demonstrated by:

  • a growing sense of responsibility and purpose for living
  • a willingness to accept responsibility for our thoughts, words and actions
  • a desire to practice forgiveness and reflect joy, harmony and unconditional love
  • Making choice that lead to growth in wisdom, gratitude and inner peace
